About this tool
This free online QR code reader decodes QR codes two ways: scan with your camera or read from an image — a photo, screenshot, or download. Decoding happens entirely in your browser, and instead of opening links automatically it shows you the full decoded content first, so you can judge where a code actually points.
How to use
- Choose “Scan with camera” and allow access, or “Read from image”.
- Point the camera at the code, or pick the image file.
- Read the decoded text — links show the full address.
- Copy the result, or open the link once you've checked it.
Common uses
Decoding a QR code from a screenshot on the same device, checking where a suspicious sticker or poster code really leads before opening it, reading the Wi-Fi credentials from a router label, or extracting the text from a code in a PDF or presentation. Made a code you want to verify? Pair this with the QR code generator.
Frequently asked questions
How does this QR code reader work?
Two ways: point your camera at a code and it scans continuously until one is found, or load a photo or screenshot that contains a code. Decoding uses your browser's built-in barcode detector when available, with a JavaScript decoder as fallback — entirely on your device.
Can I read a QR code from a screenshot or saved image?
Yes — click "Read from image" and pick any photo, screenshot, or downloaded image. This is the way to decode a QR code that's on the same device you're using, where pointing the camera at your own screen isn't possible.
Is my camera feed or image uploaded?
No. The camera preview and every decoded frame stay in your browser; images are read locally and never leave your device. Nothing is stored — close the tab and it's gone.
Why isn't the code being detected?
The usual causes: the code is too small in the frame (move closer), glare or blur (steady the camera, clean the lens), poor contrast, or a damaged print. For images, crop tighter around the code or use a sharper photo. Codes with heavy decoration or logos are also harder to decode.
Is it safe to open a link from a QR code?
Treat QR links like links in unexpected emails. This tool deliberately shows you the full decoded address instead of opening it automatically, so you can check the domain first — 'quishing' scams put malicious QR stickers over legitimate ones on parking meters and posters.
What kinds of QR content can it decode?
Any text payload: website links, Wi-Fi credentials (WIFI:…), contact cards (vCard), plain text, phone numbers, and more. The raw content is always shown as text — links additionally get an open button.
Does it work in every browser?
Yes. Chrome and Edge use the fast built-in BarcodeDetector; Firefox and Safari automatically fall back to a JavaScript decoder that loads only when needed. Camera scanning requires a camera permission; reading from an image needs none.
