About this tool

This free PDF page numbering tool adds page numbers to every page of your document — entirely in your browser, with no upload. Choose from six positions, three number formats, a custom starting number, font size, and margin, then download the numbered PDF in seconds. Because the process runs on your device, your documents stay completely private.

How to use

  1. Drop a PDF file onto the uploader or click to browse.
  2. Select a format: plain number, Page N, or N / Total.
  3. Choose a position (bottom-center is the standard).
  4. Set the starting number, font size, and margin if needed.
  5. Click Add Page Numbers and download the result.

When to use a custom start number

Many documents have a cover page and table of contents that should not appear in the numbered sequence. Set the start number to 0 on those pages — they receive an invisible number and the body pages begin naturally. For a document where body pages start on page 3, set the start number to -1 so the first body page shows 1.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Drop your PDF onto the tool, choose a format (number only, 'Page N', or 'N / Total'), pick a position and any other options, then click Add Page Numbers to download the result.

Is this page numbering tool free?

Yes — completely free with no sign-up, no upload, and no limits. Everything runs in your browser.

Where are the page numbers placed?

You can place page numbers in six positions: bottom-center, bottom-right, bottom-left, top-center, top-right, or top-left. Bottom-center is the most common convention.

Can I choose the starting page number?

Yes. Use the 'Start at page' field to begin numbering at any number. For example, set it to 3 if the first two pages are a cover and table of contents that should not be counted.

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. Page numbers are added entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.

What formats are available?

Three formats: a plain number (1, 2, 3…), 'Page N' (Page 1, Page 2…), and 'N / Total' which shows the current page and the total count (1 / 12, 2 / 12…).

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive and runs locally, so you can number PDFs on a phone or tablet without installing anything.
