How to Convert PDFs to Images or Text

Updated 2026-07-06

Sometimes a PDF isn't the shape you need. You want a page as an image to drop into a slide, or the words out of a report to reuse them. These are two different conversions, and knowing which one you need — and why one sometimes fails — saves a lot of frustration.

PDF to image

Converting a PDF page to an image (PNG or JPG) “flattens” it into a picture — a faithful visual snapshot of the page. Use it when you want to:

  • Embed a page in a presentation, document, or web page
  • Create a thumbnail or preview
  • Share a page where the layout must look exactly right

The trade-off is that the result is just pixels — the text is no longer selectable or searchable. Resolution matters here: a higher DPI gives a crisper image but a larger file. The PDF to image tool renders each page at the resolution you choose.

PDF to text

Extracting text pulls the actual words out of the PDF so you can copy, edit, or reuse them. Use it when you want the content, not the appearance — quoting a report, moving text into another document, or feeding it to another program.

Why some PDFs have no extractable text

This is the key thing to understand. PDFs come in two kinds:

  • Digital PDFs — created from a word processor or design tool. The text is real, so it extracts cleanly.
  • Scanned PDFs — created from a photo or scanner. Each page is an imageof text, with no actual characters behind it. Text extraction returns nothing, because there's no text to find.

Getting words out of a scanned PDF requires OCR (optical character recognition), which recognizes letters within the image — a different process from plain extraction. If a PDF to text conversion comes back empty, a scan is almost always why.

Converting your PDF

Turn pages into pictures with PDF to image, or pull out the words with PDF to text. Going the other direction — building a PDF from images — is what image to PDF is for. Everything runs locally in your browser. For reorganizing PDFs, see our guide to merging and splitting PDFs.
